Biographical Information

(1887-1953) Price was an award-winning pianist and the first African-American woman to have her work performed by a major symphony (“Symphony in E Minor” was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra). She was a published composer by the time she graduated high school at age 14. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music. She was mentored by George Whitefield Chadwick and Frederick Converse. In 1910 she was head of Clark University’s music department in Atlanta, Georgia. She created more than 300 compositions and was inducted into the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 1940.
