The material used to craft this nativity is balata, a natural latex rubber tapped from the "bulletwood" tree by the Macushi people of the Kanuku Mountains of Guyana. God has assumed human nature. He likewise assumed cultural difference, and thus becomes visible in what is most precious to the Macushi.

Description

Figurines sculpted from rubber depicting the nativity of Jesus, created by unknown artists from the Macushi people of Guyana. Exhibition label originally written by Fr. Johann G. Roten, S.M. for exhibit entitled "At The Manger" and held at Roesch Library, University of Dayton.
