Abstract

In the summer of 2018, students from various University of Dayton organizations embarked on a trip to Malawi Africa. The group of students were partnered with Determined to Develop (D2D), a non-government organization (NGO). D2D was founded by a University of Dayton alumni who has been living in Malawi since 2009 and has been engaging the village and trying to positively aid the local community in various ways. During his time there, David Fink was the engineer tasked with constructing a classroom for the influx of new students at Wasambo Boy’s High School. Because all 75 currently enrolled students at Wasambo all learn in a single classroom, expansion of the facilities was needed to accommodate the growing class size for upcoming years. Working side by side with 15 local Malawians, the construction crew was able to complete the classroom up to the door frame during the 2-month stay. Contact was sustained with the foreman after the ETHOS team left as the Malawians completed the rest of the walls and roof. Additionally, a bread oven was constructed to aid the kitchen staff by alleviating the stress of cooking for large groups of people.
