Abstract
This past summer, Claire and Carter worked on a team with two other University of Dayton students, Ryan Martini and Eric Sheffield, at an organization in Quito, Ecuador, named Engineers in Action (FIEA). The team also worked with three students from a similar program from the University of Notre Dame. FIEA coordinates around 12 projects in different parts of Ecuador. The teams focused on two sites in particular, one in Pastocalle, and one in San Ramon.
The Pastocalle project’s goal was to bring drinking water to a newly built school. The team dug a trench to connect the main water line to the school, and developed designs to connect the water supply to the school. Unfortunately, the project was put on hold midway through the summer due to community concerns for household water supply.
The San Ramon project’s goal was to design a wastewater management system for this rural mountainous community. This project involved intensive interviews, surveying, wastewater system research, and water and soil testing to develop a design for this community. In the end, the University of Notre Dame students compiled this information and presented a design to the community for future engineering groups to use.
