Abstract

This report summarizes the collaborative work completed between ETHOS participants from the University of Dayton and a Bangladeshi non-government organization (NGO) named IIRD. This work focused on the creation of an Arsenic Mitigation Program (AMP) to resolve the problem of arsenic contamination in the drinking water of the village Shahadebpur, subdistrict Kachua, district Chandpur, Bangladesh. The report presents the research conducted on four arsenic removal technologies, as well as background information of the current drinking water infrastructure in Shahadebpur. The researched technologies include household filters, community filters, deep tubewells, and piped systems. Each of the researched technologies were then evaluated against each other according to a set of eight defined criterion. Through the use of a decision matrix, household filters proved to be the most appropriate technology for Shahadebpur. Of the available household filters, the Bangladeshi produced SONO filter was selected. An extensive distribution program was then formulated using input from experts in NGO program management, experts in arsenic removal technology, social workers, and villagers. The AMP includes means for introduction of filters to the village, training of users, distribution logistics, user payment plans, technical support, and program progress tracking. As well, a division of responsibilities and a preliminary budget have been established. The program has now reached the stage in which it is considering different funding sources.
