Abstract

University of Dayton Mechanical Engineering student Drew Morrison served as a volunteer with the Center for Development with Solar Energy (CEDESOL Foundation) for ten weeks in 2008 as part of the University of Dayton Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities for Service (ETHOS) program. During his placement, he carried out two major projects for CEDESOL. In the first project he prepared grant applications for several international foundations with the eventual objective of securing grant funding for CEDESOL projects. In the second project, he assisted in industrializing the production of parts for rocket stoves through troubleshooting and defining operating parameters for a Computer Numerical Controlled plasma cutting system. Conclusions drawn from the result of this work has shown, respectively, that grant writing is a powerful but complimentary fundraising tool for foundations or other organizations with variable income streams, and that lack of local technical expertise is a major obstacle to utilizing high-tech equipment in a developing-world context.
