Abstract

For ten weeks in the summer of 2009, I worked as a marketing intern for Grupo Fenix, a family of organizations located in Nicaragua. I worked for The Solar Center, a project headed by The Solar Women of Totogalpa which is an organization within Grupo Fenix. The Solar Women of Totogalpa are a group of local women who work to promote and produce solar energy. The organization doubles as a social network and a business. Their sustainable projects include the construction and vending of solar cookers, planning for a solar restaurant, the expansion and maintenance of organic gardens, and the creation and installation of solar panels. The Solar Center has become a place for international education and the exchange of knowledge. The center has a continual flow of volunteers from a variety of social and educational backgrounds. These volunteers work closely with The Solar Women to help develop the Solar Center. In addition, the center has become an educational center for curious Nicaraguans and tourists. Visitors come regularly to inquire about products and learn about sustainable energy. The Solar Center was finished in 2007 and has grown immensely in the past 2 years. Currently, the center is focusing on business capacity expansion, product development, improving management structure, marketing, and acquiring a legal business status for The Solar Women of Totogalpa.
