Abstract

Upon arrival in Cochabamba on May 17th 2009, Mike Naleid and Erik Reiersen primarily took on the task of two large projects during their stay, both dealing with the design of new wood burning ecological stoves. Before leaving for CEDESOL in May, they were in contact with David Whitfield and briefly discussed his ideas for a new rocket stove that would be used for making chicha, a native drink of the Andes Mountain regions. Considering the pot size for a typical batch of chicha is around 500L, the design of the stove consisted of the same principles for a small rocket stove but on a large scale. This project, unfortunately, could not be completed due to money restrictions, but our research and design hopes to be implemented at CEDESOL when the time is right.

The second project involved the design and construction of a prototype for a 100L institutional stove with the overall goal of being utilized in local schools. Aside from these two major projects, Mike and Erik assisted in day to day activities around the office and were also helpful with setting up for demonstrations and assisting CEDESOL in any way they could.
