Abstract

For ten weeks in the summer of 2008, work was done involving the design and installation of solar systems with Suni Solar, S.A., a company in Managa, Nicaragua. Suni Solar sells solar panels, wind turbines, and solar hot water systems, usually for off-grid applications. Work included the sizing and pricing of solar systems based on available panels and batteries, weather conditions, applications, and customer needs. In addition work was done collecting census data to estimate market potential for renewable energy systems in Nicaragua. During the experience, much was learned about practical photovoltaic applications and about renewable energy technologies applied to developing markets.
