Abstract
A major health problem in rural Bolivia is the amount of respiratory illnesses caused by people using open fires inside one room houses to cook and provide heat. The death rate of respiratory illnesses is higher than that of Malaria. The rocket stove was originally design by Larry Winiarski in the 1980’s. David Whitfield, who is the executive director of The CEDESOL foundation located in Cochabamba, Bolivia has tweaked the design of this stove, and also has begun work to find the best way to increase the efficiency of the stoves to minimize the amount of smoke they produce. Another challenge that exists in rural Bolivia is the lack of wood and other resources required to cook food. The CEDESOL foundation has been experimenting with retained heat cookers as a way of using the least amount of fuel to cook food properly. The other benefit for this type of cooker is that it gives off no emission which reverts back to the respiratory problems.
