Abstract
This past summer, the team traveled to Huehuetenango, Guatemala to work with the Zona Juvenil Youth Ranch Home on several different projects. Huehuetenango is located 162 miles north-west of Guatemala City. It is about a 6-hour drive from Guatemala City to Huehuetenango, and about a 3-hour drive from Huehuetenango to the southern border of Mexico. The various mountain ranges and volcanoes littering the country cause Guatemala to have many different cultures and climates. Huehuetenango is in the Cuchumatanes mountain range that has peaks reaching 10,997 ft. The Youth Ranch Home is a small orphanage just outside of the city of Huehuetenango. The Home is funded entirely from donations which pay for food, school, projects around the house, and weekend outings. The team worked on a stone staircase, gas hot water heater, cabinets, pumps, bunk beds, shelves, patio, float valves, ozone water filter, grill, plancha style (flat-top) rocket stove, zero waste water system. This report will focus on the plancha rocket stove and water systems. The initial design for the rocket stove was based on Instructables.com “16 brick rocket stove”. [1] This design was coupled with a plancha style rocket stove the team saw while in Guatemala.
