Abstract
The design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance of the bio-sand filter were adopted from the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology’s (CAWST) bio-sand filter manual. Small design modifications were introduced during construction to make the bio-sand filters appropriate for Barombi Mbo. Implementation techniques for the bio-sand filter were developed by the project team and utilized CAWST teaching aids.
The bio-sand filter technology was first developed in the 1990’s by Dr. David Manz to provide inexpensive, safe, drinking water for communities in developing countries. The bio-sand filter, a modified form of the better known slow sand filters, allows the point of use filter to be used intermittently and develop a biological layer to more effectively clean drinking water.
Each bio-sand filter will successfully clean drinking water for ten people. Therefore it is the project team’s goal for every house in Barombi Mbo to own a bio-sand filter. At time of departure the project team had completed ten filters and trained a villager filter technician to continue production.
