Abstract

The main purpose for us in Bolivia was to obtain reportable data for several rocket stoves made by the CEDESOL organization. There are three different stove models that all function on the rocket stove principal. The first is an on the floor design that does not have a chimney and uses a standard five liter pot. The second is an institutional model which uses a one hundred liter pot and has a chimney. The third and final stove is ultimately meant to be installed on a counter in a home and consists of two combustion chambers with a five liter pot above each chamber. This third stove also has a chimney for the removal of hazardous gases from the home. These stoves were all constructed with thin brick combustion chambers. The institutional and two burner stoves used ashes as insulation and the floor stove used rice hulls. Essentially our purpose while working with CEDESOL was to run the Water Boiling Test on all three stoves and obtain reportable data. To accomplish this we found it would be necessary do dedicate a significant amount of time to running these tests under different conditions several times each. We were also provided with the opportunity to work alongside another ETHOS sponsored project in Bolivia. The Bolivia Project is the brain child of Michael Vehar and Collin Whelley. This project essentially subsidizes a large portion of the cost of the solar cookers and also helps provide the necessary personnel to perform solar cooker courses. Throughout our time in Bolivia we were fortunate enough to get to participate in several of these courses and witness the effect this technology can have on a person’s life.
