Abstract

The eight weeks that the University of Dayton engineering student spent in southern Mexico were different from a structured internship experience, in that the engineering student was forced to create his own engineering work to complete while he lived there. This task of finding engineering work was not an easy one because of language barriers and cultural differences that existed between the engineering student and the people that he worked closely with and lived with on a daily basis. Because of the basic needs of the people where the engineering student was living, much time had to be spent on tasks for survival instead of always concentrating on engineering related work. However, connections can be made between the tasks of survival and future engineering work in the engineering student’s life; therefore, these basic tasks contributed to the engineering student’s growth as an engineer.
