Abstract

The engineering team travelled to the small town of Comitancillo, Guatemala for the summer to work with the local organization AMMID for community improvements. The major projects of the team included development of a water filtration project using ceramic filters, water deposit construction, and attempts to develop an existing design for a manual, low-tech PVC water pump. After much research, it is still undetermined whether or not a water filtration project is feasible – more groundwork needs to be done regarding collection and distribution of project funds, organization of materials and other resources needed for filter fabrication, and overall business plan. Usage and operation of water deposits need to be evaluated post-construction in order to ensure that they are being used properly. Finally, different designs of low-tech PVC pumps need to be developed and tested in order to optimize the design and make it easier and more efficient to use for high-volume water needs.
