Abstract

Due to the increasing food insecurity in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, a needs assessment was implemented to explore the contributing factors to food insecurity and discuss possible solutions. Ten focus groups were conducted with low-income county residents (N = 89). Coding, horizontilization, and clustering of meanings were used for data analysis. Three main themes emerged: (1) food accessibility amid local food assistance; (2) the economy has an enormous impact on food insecurity; and (3) food shopping follows similar patterns. These findings will inform the development of a comprehensive plan to become a hunger-free community and to serve as a model for other communities.
