Writing Process
At the beginning of the semester, I decided to analyze the historical conversation of the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant for my ASI 120 Historiography. To start my research, I collected relevant sources, from historians, that cover Grant’s presidency from multiple decades dating back to the 1930s. Then I wrote an annotated bibliography, where I read and articulated the main argument of each source to highlight the author’s contribution to the historiography, while also examining their evidence to determine the distinctive qualities of their work. I also created three different categories of interpretation and placed each historian’s perspective of Grant into the appropriate category. After this I developed a draft of my historiography, based off of my annotated bibliography, that details how the historical narrative changed over time due to the historical moment of each category. In the latter part of my paper, I argued which group’s interpretation was the most accurate, based off their evidence and reasoning. I was able to finalize my paper through the feedback I received from my professor and a peer review.
