Description

Puritans of 18th century New England colonies conjures up images of no frills and no fun. In fact, theatrical productions were banned for most of this period. However, the relationship between the dissenting Christian Protestants of the northeast and the performing arts is complicated. There was far more theater and music being performed and produced than most would guess. This presentation will track some of the examples of what artists could and could not get away with in 18th century New England under Puritan dominated government and culture.
