Why the honoree chose the book
I decided to pursue a career in mathematics education because I believed there was a better way to teach math. I grew up with math anxiety and believed that I was not a "math person." It became a goal of mine to help educate preservice teachers on ways to teach math that can be fun and engaging. This text spoke to me because I too struggled with timed tests and have watched, on numerous occasions, the detrimental effects it can have on students. This book highlights the research behind why not to use timed tests and provides numerous activities and assessment techniques for addressing fact fluency. Not only did it validate my own teaching philosophy, but it inspired me to continue to advocate for change in outdated mathematics teaching techniques.
