Why the honoree chose the book

This book was written and published by Adam Smith years before his celebrated Wealth of Nations and is an indispensable reading to understand Smith's ideas about laissez-faire market economy. Without a wide base of ethical people raised with sound moral character, the idea that an "invisible hand" will ensure the allocation of capital to the best ideas cannot function. This is why sound character and values are the basis of society and freedom.
