Why the honoree chose the book

Schneider's examination of the connections between living history projects, archival work, and performance radically changed the ways in which I think about the ways musicians perform the past. She beautifully describes the complex politics of gender, race, and performance in the work of civil war reenactors while examining her own slippery position in the complex interplay of time and meaning as she writes and reperforms history.
