Why the honoree chose the book
After more than 35 years doing cutting-edge research in laser radar and optical communications, my interests have moved, somewhat ironically, toward understanding primitive technology and the origins of science and engineering. John Plant is one of the world's foremost experts in the primitive technology revival. He's not a "survivalist" in the common, pejorative, sense of the term. Instead, from fire-by-friction to primitive pottery, stone tool making, and even rudimentary iron smelting, Plant has reawakened the interest of many in exploring our collective primitive past. His YouTube channel is even better than his book!
