Why the honoree chose the book
We are living in perilous times. Our democratic principles are increasingly threatened by the rise of authoritarianism at nearly every level of government, and think tanks like the Economist Intelligence Unit and the International IDEA have labeled the U.S. as a "flawed" and "backsliding" democracy. Relatedly, our progress toward social justice and civil rights for our most vulnerable citizens is also backsliding. However, as author Timothy Snyder shares, "History does not repeat, but it does instruct. … History can familiarize, and it can warn." I selected the book On Tyranny Graphic Edition: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century precisely for its instructive nature. May it wake us all and serve as a guide as we defend our fragile democracy and care for our communities in the years ahead.
