Why the honoree chose the book
This book grapples with the issues underlying how scientific knowledge develops. Mayo's formalization of the concept of severity provides a great lens through which to critically evaluate many of the statistical tools scientists use to learn from their data. This book helped me develop a relatively coherent perspective on what I want from my science — and the sorts of approaches that might help me get there.
