Why the honoree chose the book
I never intended to become a medievalist who did Jewish studies; I came to graduate school interested in working in rhetoric and composition. Forced to take a medieval literature course, I enrolled in a class about Geoffrey Chaucer and was introduced to his work in Middle English for the first time through The Riverside Chaucer. Toward the end of the semester, I read Chaucer's "The Prioress's Tale" and discovered that there was medieval antisemitism (not just the anti-Jewish hate in the 20th century). Chaucer's tale made me realize what my dissertation would deal with, but Charles Reznikoff's The Lionhearted: A Story about the Jews in Medieval England and Michael Adler's incredibly detailed and well-researched book Jews of Medieval England encouraged me to grow into the scholar of medieval Jewish studies that I have become.
