When floodwaters struck Dayton in 1913, those who fled to high ground just south of where the waters crested at Apple Street found shelter, food and welcome from the Marianists at St. Mary’s College, the school that later became the University of Dayton. Over 800 refugees were cared for during this time, with most of the family names recorded in a registry.
St. Mary's students wrote about the devastating event in the April-May issue of the Exponent, a student-published campus magazine. Stories of rescues and bravery from the Marianists and community members can be found here.
