Dr. Thomas Hunt, Catholic education historian and Fellow to the Center for Catholic Education, will discuss the themes of his book, Urban Catholic Education: Tales of Twelve American Cities, edited by Thomas Hunt and Timothy Walch. This book is a case study of Catholic education in twelve major American cities from the 19th century until the mid-20th century. Each chapter examines a different city in relation to its ethnic mix, the position of the city’s Catholic leaders and population toward Catholic schools, the attitude of the general population toward Catholicism and Catholic schools, and the growth and size of the Catholic population in the city. Some of the key themes include survival, immigration, ethnicity, adaptability, community, identity, and Catholic response to the schools.
