Abstract
This phenomenological study explores the transitional experiences of first-generation, non-athlete college men from high school to Present Day University (PDU) following the COVID-19 pandemic. Using Schlossberg’s Transition Theory as a framework, the research examines changes in self-perception, campus environment, sources of support, and academic strategies. Through interviews and photovoice methodology, themes of personal growth, changing social/emotional needs, major stressors, campus resources, and outside support emerged. Findings highlight the critical role of peers, faculty, and family support in first-generation student success at PDU. The study offers actionable recommendations to improve institutional support for first-year, first-generation men, emphasizing holistic mentoring, faculty/staff training, and increased communication with first-generation student families and support systems.
