Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the readiness for the implementation of genetics and genomics into routine clinical research by Clinical Research Professionals (CRPs) that interface patients and providers to carry out research projects. The project aimed to address the critical gap of the genetic and genomic proficiency of CRPs. The goal of the study was to move toward enabling competence and confidence of CRPs in utilizing and communicating clinical genetic and genomic information into various aspects of their professional roles. I studied the experience of CRPs because I wanted to learn their perspectives on participant engagement with genetic and genomic content to help my reader understand the value of tailored training programs for CRPs and their consequent impact on the equitable expansion of the utility of genetic information and genomic medicine. Implications that may stem from the findings include actionable steps that may be taken to support not only individual CRPs, but their work outcomes. Gaining insight into the most relevant topics for CRPs ensures practitioner-centered approaches towards bolstering genetic and genomic literacy. Structured support will enable CRPs to grow their knowledge and understanding to meet the needs of increasingly complex protocols and expand the reach of genetics and genomics toward more representative engagement, recruitment, and retention in clinical research. The resulting action plan outlines the creation of meaningful strategies for CRPs to integrate into daily practice, that aligns with industry recognized standards to uphold the ethical conduct of research.
