Abstract
Kofi Annan said, "literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty ..." This presentation connects two initiatives that Dayton Foundation Del Mar Encore Fellows work with, Preschool Promise and The Brunner Literacy Center. Preschool Promise readies 3- and 4-year-olds for kindergarten which largely focuses on the development of literacy skills and Brunner Literacy Center empowers adults to lead better lives through literacy. Presenters will share the need for programs in the community and the success stories that can be told which will show that a focus on literacy will lead to a more equitable Dayton.
