The Marian Philatelist began with the publication of a bulletin for the Madonna Study Group on September 19, 1962 with W. J. Hoffman as editor and Reverend A.S. Horn as Chairman. The initial issue addressed how the organization, devoted to the study of Mary on stamps, would be structured and the relationship to the organization COROS (Collectors of Religion on Stamps). By the third issue of the first volume, issued on November 1, 1962, the publication was referred to as the "Bulletin of the Madonna Study Group." The fourth issue was titled "Bulletin of the Marian Philatelic Study Group of Coros." Starting with the second volume on January 1, 1964 the publication was known by it's final name as "The Marian Philatelist" until it ceased publication in 1971. The final issue on March 1, 1971 explains that, "research on Marian stamps will be continued and the data will be made available for publication, bi-monthly, in the COROS Chronicle, starting with the April 1971 issue."
