Rhodesia was, between 1965 and 1979, an unrecognised state located in southern Africa in an area that in 1980 became the Republic of Zimbabwe. With its government based at the former colonial capital of Salisbury, its territory consisted of the former British colony of Southern Rhodesia. In an effort to prevent the immediate introduction of black majority rule, the mostly white minority government made its Unilateral Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom on 11 November 1965. Rhodesia initially sought recognition as an independent British Dominion, but, that having failed, it declared complete independence in 1970, becoming the Republic of Rhodesia. CIA—The World Factbook
