sir, we write to ask you if you will kindly send us your recent poems on “Frederick Douglass,” of which we have heard. We have not as yet had any poems concerning the illustrious Douglass, and as we desired something good, we thought we would ask you for one, if it is not asking too much.
If you cannot comply with our wish, we shall not be offended in the least, and shall look upon it as an adherence to a point of professional duty in not

furnishing “goods” gratis. We would willingly purchase your poems if we were financially able. Hoping that you will give this letter your consideration, we are yours for success,

This item is part of the Paul Laurence Dunbar House collection at Ohio History Connection, Columbus, Ohio. The collection contains items from 219 N. Summit St., Dayton, Ohio (later 219 N. Paul Laurence Dunbar St.), the home Dunbar purchased for his mother, Matilda J. Dunbar, in 1904. Paul Laurence Dunbar lived there until his death in 1906; Matilda lived there until her death in 1934. It is now the Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site, part of the National Park Service.
