Description

Full text of letter:

1st July, 1895

Mr. Paul L. Dunbar,

Dear Sir:

I have been a long time getting to your story. I was not in town when it came, and found a great accumulation [of] work when I returned. The story is well written, and moves forward in a good swift way, and shows several virtues. But I am forced to say that it does not seem very real to me; and I don’t see how we can use it. I hope you wont take this judgment to heart, however. It means, at the worst merely that you are to try again; for we shall be very glad to hear from you again. I saw your poem in the “Century” & congratulate you on it.

Yours Truly, E.C. Martin.
