Why the honoree chose the book
As an English major-turned-scientist, I have traveled far afield from my undergraduate roots in the study of literature. As I studied Jane Austen, I fell in love with the stories of characters making their way through the world. As I became a physical therapist and a scientist, I learned to discriminate between fantasy and reality, and I recognized the importance of self-reflection of what I perceive versus what is real. Austen's Northanger Abbey is a lesson in self-discovery and truth-seeking where the heroine, Catherine Morland, learns these lessons as well — not to confuse what you think you see without first gaining knowledge of what is true. Harkening back to my roots studying literature, I find this book provides a fun way of sharing how I started and where I am today.
