Why the honoree chose the book

The Bloody Chamber opened me up to the possibilities of counternarrative and storytelling as a means of feminist resistance. Dreamlike, at times terrifying, and darkly sensual, this particular collection of reimagined fairy tales taught me about the need to liberate ourselves from the Western myths that have shaped some of our dangerous ideas around gender roles. Sometimes literature, and not hard research, can drive us to ask bigger questions about who we are and why we do the things we do.
