Why the honoree chose the book
I met Dr. Ripolles at a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar at the American Academy in Rome in 2011. The book is the first English-language study of a 17th-century Portuguese painter, well-known and influential in her time. I requested this book for a number of reasons: It reminds me of the opportunities I have had available to me as a UD faculty member; it reinforces for me how much I have learned from studying with art historians; it helps make clear how much of the history of women we still have to learn; it supports an excellent scholar's first book; and it deepens our sense of the breadth and depth of what we study when we study Catholic intellectual tradition.
