Why the honoree chose the book

This book was written by my dissertation advisor, mentor, and friend. He wrote it in response to a tendency by traditional philosophers of art to treat artworks as essentially static rather than culturally variable and changing. It provided me with one of the keys to understanding why dance is mischaracterized and misunderstood by analytic Aesthetics.
