Why the honoree chose the book
Marcuse's One-Dimensional Man made an early and profound impression on me as a scholar and as a political thinker for the way it captures the repressive and alienating nature of social life under capitalism and how, in order for radical visions of emancipation to take hold, it is incumbent on all of us to resist and refuse authoritarian forces in the market and in government.
