Description
Color photograph of a rare book, by photographer Sean Wilkinson, who joined the faculty of the University of Dayton in 1973. He obtained his B.A. from Antioch College and his M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. Sean also studied with notable photographers Minor White, Harry Callahan, and Aaron Siskind. From the photographer--"This picture was made in the John Ritblat Gallery in the British Library, London. The Ritblat Gallery features an extraordinary collection of rare books, maps, letters, and musical scores. Ordinarily, photography is not allowed, but the British Library staff very graciously made an exception when I explained my work on a major project in which I was making photographs in museums of various kinds throughout much of Western Europe. The pictures for this project were made slightly out of focus because I was interested in the suggestion of things rather than in detailed descriptions. It was my intention here to evoke the appearance and power of an ancient book without indicating exactly which book it was." Sean joined the faculty of UD in 1973. He obtained his B.A. from Antioch College and his M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. Sean also studied with notable photographers Minor White, Harry Callahan, and Aaron Siskind.
