This chapter considers the role of religious community outreach in the development of a Catholic library research center, as founded and administered by a Catholic religious order. The principles of the order of the Society of Mary (Marianists), the history of Catholic theologies of and devotion to the Virgin Mary, particularly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and broader Catholic social movements and Church infrastructures were all formative for the Marian Library at the University of Dayton, Ohio, in its first 25 years.
