Biographical Information
(1887-1953) Florence Beatrice Price was an award-winning pianist and the first African American woman to have her work performed by a major symphony (Symphony in E Minor was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra). She was a published composer by the time she graduated from high school at age 14. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music to major in piano and organ. She was mentored by George Whitefield Chadwick and Frederick Converse. In 1910, she was head of Clark University’s music department in Atlanta, Georgia. She created more than 300 compositions and was inducted into the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers in 1940.
