Biographical Information
(1856-1938) Mary Elizabeth Turner Salter was an American soprano, teacher, poet, and composer from Peoria, Illinois. She attended the Boston College of Music. She also studied at the New England Conservatory with Hermine Rudersdorff. She had no formal training in theory or composition yet wrote more than 200 songs, anthems, and other choral works. She sang in many Boston and New York churches and in many choral society concerts. Salter taught singing at Wellesley College from 1879 to 1881. She was one of the founding members of the American Society of Women Composers.
