Abstract
There has been an explosion in the number of health-related smartphone applications, or apps, available for download. These products nowinclude apps concerning concussion. From April to August 2011, at least seven concussion-related apps were released. The primary focus of these apps is assessment at the time of injury. One exception to this trend is Psychological Assessment Resources' (PAR) Concussion Recognition & Response: Coach & Parent Version.
PAR's Concussion Recognition & Response app provides a checklist of concussion signs/symptoms designed to help coaches and parents determine whether to remove a child from play and seek medical attention. Unlike its competitors, the Concussion Recognition & Response app also offers approaches to managing concussion beyond the acute phase of the injury. The app was released in May 2011 and is available for download to iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android devices and tablets at a nominal cost. The Concussion Recognition & Response app was developed by Gerald Gioia, PhD, chief of the division of pediatrie neuropsychology at Children's National Medical Center and director of the hospital's Safe Concussion Outcome Recovery & Education program, and Jason Mihalik, PhD, CAT(C), ATC, an assistant professor in the department of exercise and sport science at The University of North Carolina and codirector of the university's Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center.
