Abstract
This panel discussion will examine the realities of what it means to be Black and elderly in Dayton and the Miami Valley region and how unequal aging effects health in particular, among elderly Black residents.
The panel members will also discuss the myths that surround aging itself, the myths around what it means to be Black and how the stereotypes effect community structures. An overview of some of the factors that can mitigate the inequality will be presented with identified examples of transforming policies/programs for intentional interventions that can and do increase resilience.
Opportunities that will help overcome challenges will be addressed including policy changes that close gaps undermining the quality-of-life improvements for minority/underserved communities as well as planned age-friendly initiatives in the Miami Valley region.
