Description

Canopy gap dynamics is a process of tree mortality and regeneration that happens when one or several canopy trees fall due to natural tree death or small-scale tornadoes, wind events, or old age, puncturing the overstory. Working at different spatial and temporal scales, gap-phase dynamics vary in intensity and in return interval, resulting in a “fine-grained mosaic” (Runkle,1991) of patches that vary in size, regeneration time, and structure which spans over entire landscapes.
