Abstract
3D Scanners in Pediatrics:
The presenter will provide a brief highlight of information shared at the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association on February 25, 2023. This session highlighted the use of three-dimensional (3D) scanners and their potential role in the pediatric PT clinic.
A general overview of the types of 3D infrared LED scanners that are available for clinical use will be provided.. The workflow to obtain a 3D scan will be demonstrated. Scanners are often utilized by other health care providers, such as orthotists, to fabricate orthotics and these scanners are beginning to be used in PT clinics. The 3D scan allows for visual and objective measurement comparison at a later date. The visual documentation can inform clinical decision making, patient and caregiver education, and the need for referral.
Additionally, this session will outline the benefits and limitations of using 3D scanners, discussion of clinical applications of the use of the scanners in the clinic, focusing on the pediatric population and how scanners may improve clinical measures. Current evidence on scanners will be reviewed, focusing on the pediatric population.
