Why the honoree chose the book
My teaching in psychology, my interests in cognitive neuroscience, and my research in perception and aesthetics have been inspired and enriched by Livingstone’s work described in Vision and Art: The Biology of Seeing. Many of us, teachers and students alike, struggle to understand the interactions between teaching and research, as well as the complex relations between fundamental biological and cognitive processes and how they affect our appreciation of art. My hope is that others at the University of Dayton will be excited by Margaret Livingstone’s clear and engaging explanations of these interactions and their impact on aesthetic appreciation and creative production.
