Why the honoree chose the book
Mary McLeod Bethune's life work is inspirational for me as an educator committed to equity, social justice and solidarity. She is a powerful exemplar of the importance of education in uplifting a community. Bethune was a force in civic, education and social spheres. She built institutions (Bethune-Cookman College) and organizations (National Council of Negro Women) that are lasting legacies that continue to influence and benefit American society today.
