Why the honoree chose the book
I inherited A Killer Life from a previous syllabus of the first upper-level undergrad class I ever taught (Culture and the Moving Image at Bowling Green State University). This book — and the class generally — ignited my passion for independent cinema and put me on the scholarly path of considering the relationship between a film's mode of production and how it reflects the society it emerged from. More importantly, Christine Vachon's witty, pragmatic memoir about her experiences as an indie producer guided me in how to navigate my own profession without losing the passion that led me to be a teacher-scholar in the first place.
